Get Ready

Things to consider about weather / climate:

The Altamaha River basin area is famous for its change in weather. The temperature can change 30-40 degrees in a 12-hour period. Therefore, hunting apparel should be comfortable in a wide variety of temperatures and have the ability to conceal one's scent. During the winter, dressing in layers is a good option to help control perspiration. Rain is a possibility at any time during the year. Waterproof clothing and/or poncho could be appropriate. With fluctuating river levels, some type of waterproof footwear is a must. On occasion, hip waders could be necessary. Summer-time hunting could consist of wearing shorts and short-sleeves. Clothing for any hunt and any weather should be comfortable.

Things to consider about scent control:

Scent control while hunting is vital to a successful hunt. It has been said that a hog has ten times the sense of smell of that of a whitetail deer. Therefore, it is, perhaps, one of the most important precautions and steps you will take to ensure that you are as successful as possible during your hunt. It is my personal experience that hogs can smell food that is buried up to at least 12" in the ground. It is recommended that you bring scent-control spray. Each hunter should bring their hunting apparel that has already been washed using scent-control detergent in a plastic air-tight bag. This will ensure that no scents contaminate the clothing during travel.
